Our vision is to be a servant church, seeking to be faithful to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, continuing in the teaching and fellowship of the Apostles.

The mission of St. John's is to glorify God and proclaim Jesus Christ in the fullness of the Holy Spirit and in obedience to Holy Scripture. As Christ's servant leaders, we strive to provide inspirational worship, quality education, and proactive pastoral care, in order that others may be led to the saving relationship with Christ Jesus

The history of St. John's Episcopal Church reflects the working of the Holy Spirit in Petaluma. On July 31, 1856, a small group of families from the young Petaluma village gathered together based on their mutual belief in the Episcopal tradition. This group was formed into the first congregation and met at irregular intervals with the Bishop, William Kip, and other supply clergymen conducting services.

The first church building was erected in 1860 and was served by various rectors from 1860-1954. In 1954-1974, Father Godfrey Hartzel was rector of St. John's. The church flourished during his ministry and he was greatly loved and respected. From 1973-1985 Father Timothy West became rector. He introduced new ideas, such as more services and Bible studies, guest speakers, and small groups. In 1986, Father William George became rector. He felt his calling was to challenge people to a deeper walk with Christ; not just lukewarm Christianity. He also started a school for several years.

Between the years of 1993-1995, a period of division took place. Unresolved differences resulted in many people leaving St. John's, although some members who left have since returned. In 1996 Father Norman Cram came to St. John's as Priest-in-Charge. He was a former Navy chaplain, and brought reconciliation and healing to the church. he gave St. John's members a sense of stability and peace during a difficult transition. He also encouraged looking outside the Church for opportunities for ministry in the world outside. The current rector of St. John's is the Rev. David H. Miller.

St. John's was founded in 1856, and the first permanent pastor was the Rev. George B. Taylor. The first service conducted in our current church building was in 1891 by the rector, Rev. John Partridge.

Hallelujah! Happy are they who fear the Lord and have great delight in his commandments! Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Psalm 112: 1-2
